Enhance Corporate Health & Fitness Program
In the workplace today, many modes of efficiency have been developed. Software programs have been created that can manage an entire company. Faxing, emailing, internet, and PDAs have made physical mobility at work almost unnecessary. One can easily complete and submit projects or proposals, conduct meetings or conferences, market their company and complete a vast number of other tasks without ever leaving their desk. With food delivery being readily available, employees don’t even have to leave their desk for lunch. While these things are convenient and efficient, they bear consequences. For the employee the consequences include low energy and risk for health problems. For the company the consequences include absenteeism and lower productivity. Within every company there are increasing rates of heart disease, cancer, obesity, common colds, anxiety, depression, stress, back disorders, and fatigue. The way to remedy this is to encourage employees to care for their health with exercise and proper nutrition. This allows them to be more productive and truly take advantage of the modern conveniences in the office. The bottom line in business is that the more efficient the company is, the more money the company makes.
Reducing Health Insurance Costs and Profit Loss
Corporate Health Insurance
Unhealthy employees equal higher volume of health insurance claims which in turn means higher health insurance costs for the company and/or employee. Reducing health insurance claims means saving money.
Medical claim costs were 55% lower among corporate fitness program participants than non-participants over a period of 6 years. The average savings per participant was almost $400. (American Journal of Health Promotion, Health Values, Health Behavior and the Canadian Journal of Public Health)
More than 60% of American adults do not get enough physical activity. (Pratt M, Macera CA, Wang G. "Higher Direct Medical Costs Associated with Physical Inactivity." The Physician and Sports Medicine, 2000, vol. 28 no. 10, pp 63-70)
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate that if all inactive Americans became active, we would save $77 billion in annual medical costs
Profit Loss
It’s estimated that one million Americans call in sick every day. This costs companies in decreased productivity, sick pay and profits. One of the biggest reasons for missed work is the common cold, which is highly contagious. Inactivity and poor diet cause the immune system to weaken, leaving the body at high risk of catching a cold. Another factor of decreased productivity and missed work is stress; 12% of employees call in sick because they are stressed (2000 Integra Survey).
Studies have shown that employees that engage in physical activity feel less stress, get sick less often, can control weight, and become more enthused and energetic.
Job Satisfaction = Enthusiasm and Productivity
A fit employee can complete 60% more work than an unhealthy employee
As high as 80% of employees in corporate fitness programs believe their exercise program made them more productive at work. (American Journal of Health Promotion, Health Values, Health Behavior and the Canadian Journal of Public Health)
Offering Health and Fitness services as an employee benefit has been shown to decrease employee turnover by 40%
