Do You Have Oxidative Stress?
Combat it with Antioxidants
Our bodies are constantly reacting with oxygen. We need oxygen to breathe and execute normal body functions. Without oxygen we cannot survive. Our bodies process oxygen for energy. When the body uses oxygen, chemical changes take place which then creates unstable oxygen molecules called free radicals. Free radicals can cause damage to the cells and structures within the cells.
What causes increased production of free radicals:
- Psychological stress – when the mind is under mental stress, the body produces hormones that create and trigger free radicals
- Exercise – excessive physical stress can cause oxidative stress. Too much exercise can breakdown muscle tissue which then compromises the body’s immunity to fatigue and disease
- Smoking/alcohol consumption/illegal drug use
- Poor nutrition – high sugar intake, high fat diets, preservatives, etc.
- External factors – pollution and excessive amounts of sunlight
- Normal processes in the body – burning of sugars for energy
Free Radical Damage Can:
- Disrupt a cell’s normal ability to replicate healthy cells
- Accelerate the aging process
- Contribute to the development of chronic diseases (cancer, heart diseases, macular degeneration, diabetes, etc.)
- Body is more susceptible to common colds due to weak immunity
So how do we protect ourselves from all of that damage?
Antioxidants
Antioxidants can prevent and protect cells from free radical damage. Antioxidants are found in the food we eat like fruits, vegetables, meat, fish, nuts, and grains. Antioxidants can prevent or slow down the oxidative damage to our body.
Antioxidants are dietary substances and nutrients such as:

Youth Strength & Conditioning
Working Hard vs. Working Smart
Throughout my time as a personal trainer, athletic performance coach, and a youth fitness specialist, I have been perplexed by some of the exercise principles that are not being taught to kids when participating in a fitness program or sport. In this newsletter, I would like to address the facts about “working hard vs. working smart” and what we should expect from a safe and effective youth strength and conditioning program.
Kids are Kids, not adults!
In my quest of becoming a fitness specialist, I had many questions that needed answers. So, I turned to the coaches. I asked three youth coaches for ages eight through 13 where they get their workouts for their teams. Here were there answers:
1.
From the high school coach;
2.
Online; and
3.
I just run them until they are tired, then I know they worked hard
At first, I found that answer number one was well thought out and most logical. This coach took time to ask a local high school football coach what he should be doing in his exercise program. The coach had no problem talking, demonstrating, and designing a strength program for the youth coach to bring back to his youth football team (130 lb. Weight class).
Well, I was a bit curious about where this head high school football coach got his exercises, so I asked him. He said he got them from a college coach. He attends an annual football clinic where many division I college football coaches and strength and conditioning directors lecture about the game of football.
So let’s recap:
- Youth coach got his info from the high school coach
- The high school coach got his info from a college coach
See a problem?
The youth coach got his strength program indirectly from a division I football coach. So, the youth coach who is working with a bunch of kids/beginner football players is using a strength programs geared toward elite college athletes (adults).
What happen to everything in between?
This coach is allowing his youth football team participate in a strength program designed for a college football player...there is the problem. This is like skipping the training wheel step and leap right into the two wheel bicycle. Chances for injuries are much higher. Youth fitness training should not include much weight or how much they can lift (max). Youth fitness training should focus on movement, teaching how to move quickly, properly, and in a fluid motion. Kids learn through a motor development process, learning how to be strong when their center of gravity changes, and how to contract several different muscle fibers without any interference (CNS).
Improper conditioning concepts, neuromechanical capabilities, muscular imbalances, prior injuries, anatomical misalignment, limited range of motion, and improper strength training techniques are all common causes of youth sport injuries. If children continue to participate in youth sports without the proper training and knowledge of how their bodies move, youth sport injuries will continue. Common sport injuries like Osgood-Schlatter Disease, Little League Elbow, Patella Femoral Pain Syndrome, and Shin Splints can be preventable by administrating a proper youth performance program. Proper youth athletic programs should consist of four principles that will take the athlete to the next level and decrease the chance of injury. Those principals are neuromuscular coordination, hand/foot-eye coordination, strength and power training and speed and agility.
Neuromuscular Coordination
Have you ever asked yourself, “how did they do that” while watching talented athletes? Athletes are constantly thinking and reacting. Within all sports, you have a split second to decide what you need to do and how you are going to do it. One way of training that involves a lot of discipline, determination, and focus, is neuromuscular conditioning. In order to perform a highly skilled movement accurately, motor units must fire in perfect sequence. If your brain is unfamiliar with the impulse, then your body is not prepared to execute the movement. To perform the movement accurately, the brain must transmit messages smoothly to allow consistent muscular contractions. The purpose of this training phase/technique is to recruit and educate contractile units to optimize the muscle-firing sequence.
Hand/Foot-Eye Coordination
Keep your eyes on the ball! Eye-hand/foot coordination is the ability to watch with the eyes and react with the hands/feet in a very fine and direct manner. Eye-hand/feet coordination uses the eyes to direct the given attention and the hands/feet for the execution of that specific task.
Strength and Power Training
Strength is the ability to move an object. Power is the ability to move that object quickly. It is very hard to separate strength and power in athletic performance. Strength is the ability to hold a 34oz baseball bat. Power is the ability to take that baseball bat and produce enough energy to swing it. If the baseball player can not hold the baseball bat, the player can not exert enough force to swing it; therefore, strength and power go hand in hand. During strength and power training, the differences between strength and power are established along with understanding the close relationship both have in athletics. Strength and power training necessarily mean lifting weights. It is all about moving the body functionally with great force.
Speed and Agility Training
Just like strength and power, speed and agility training should not be viewed in isolation in sports. Speed and agility are both dependent on force. Speed is measured in lateral force while agility is measured in change of direction. To most coaches, speed and agility are the most important aspect in athletic performance. Both require a combination of balance, coordination, strength and power. To most athletes, speed and agility are the most difficult skills to develop, but with proper training, they become second nature.
No need to impress kids with the coolest looking, most complicated exercises. Start simple. The number one rule in exercising kids is, don’t treat them like adults! Form first then speed and complexity later.
